Vincent Sebastian Andreas: Zauberberg

From Thomas Mann's “The Magic Mountain”: For the sake of goodness and love, man should not allow death to rule his thoughts.

Thomas Mann repeatedly emphasized that his novel, “although it deals with death, is a life-friendly book, an inner quality that manifests itself outwardly through humour”. It is a humorous book and a humane one, dedicated to the human condition. At the same time, it is also a musical book. Even at the end of his life, he insisted: “My works of art, judge them as you will and must, but they were always good scores, one like the other.” And he considered The Magic Mountain to be the most musical of them all.

The Nikolassee Chamber Choir pursues his question “What is man?” in works of early music by Schütz, Scheidt, Calvisius and Bach, as well as in works from the period in which The Magic Mountain was written, including works by Claude Debussy and Max Reger.
