Biennale »Paradise lost?«Debussy’s “La Mer” and Grieg’s Piano Concerto

Sky, sea and light pervade this programme with François-Xavier Roth, General Music Director of the City of Cologne, in changing constellations. The orchestral suite from Les Indes galantes, by the French baroque grand master Jean-Philippe Rameau, recalls the exotic tales of the opera, set in South America. In an expressive tone poem, Alexander Scriabin celebrates Prometheus, the bringer of fire, who, like Orion in Kaija Saariaho’s mystical composition, is a traveller between heaven and earth. Central to the evening is Claude Debussy’s impressionistic tone poem La Mer, with its iridescent shades of colour.
