Located north of Hackescher Markt, Torstraße offers a unique mixture of design stores and boutiques, galleries and restaurants.
In close proximity to Hackescher Markt and its global design fashion stores, Torstraße and the adjoining streets offer a more original, down-to-earth shopping experience with small design shops, fashion boutiques and trendy food and drink locations. Torstraße, located on the border of Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg, was also one of the first spots of the digital creative scene in Berlin.
The unsteady and fateful history of Berlin is pretty much visible in Torstraße. There are still unrestored old buildings between Friedrichstraße to the west and Prenzlauer Allee to the east showcasing contemporary art in naked rooms, as well as newly erected modern buildings and pompous buildings from the 1920s.
You won't find large fashion chains in Torstraße, instead, there are many small boutiques selling selected products and unique items. The mix between boutiques, design stores, bars and restaurants provides a colourful alternative to what mainstream shopping streets offer. Just a little north of Torstraße, Kastanienallee is another street which promises a more alternative shopping experience.
