In the southeast of Berlin, the rivers Spree and Dahme crisscross through the city. The area is also home to Berlin's largest lake, the Müggelsee, and several other smaller lakes. The ferry line F12 functions as a mobile bridge in this water-rich area, allowing passengers to quickly and easily get from the district of Grünau to Wendenschloss and vice versa without kilometer-long detours. A trip on the ferry F12, which operates year-round, only takes a few minutes. The F12 is the oldest one of the BVG's ferry lines and was in operation well before before the Second World War. Up until the 1980s, the ferryman lived in the ferry house next to the pier.
