On May 8, 2010, the Park Tempelhofer Feld on the former airport site was reopened to all Berliners and guests of the city for the first time in 80 years. Since then, the vast area has been increasingly conquered by residents and visitors alike. People barbecue, rest or play on the endless meadows. The wide, long runways offer enough space for surfers, skaters, kite flyers, cyclists and pedestrians.
A combine harvester mows a meadow on Tempelhofer Feld. In coordination with the Supreme Nature Conservation Authority of the State of Berlin, the 120-hectare meadow areas are mowed according to a sophisticated rhythm. The first half is mowed first, followed by the second half in three to four weeks. This allows insects to move from the mowed sections to the areas that have not yet been mowed.
Cross-country skiers took advantage of the sunny and cold winter weather to ski on the former tarmac of Tempelhof Airport in Berlin. Three parallel cross-country trails were groomed on a course about five kilometers long.
Planned redesign of the area of Tempelhofer Park: A water basin with a subsequent watercourse begins at the eastern edge of the apron, south of the taxiway, in front of the Columbia Quarter and then extends west along the border between the apron and the site.
