Senate adopts draft supplementary budget

The Senate has passed the draft supplementary budget law.

The black-red coalition government has taken an important step forward in its plans to save billions in the 2025 budget. The Senate has unanimously approved the draft for the necessary amendment to the budget law, as announced by Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU).

The supplementary budget is to be passed by the state parliament before Christmas. Only then will the austerity program finally be a done deal. To make this possible, the draft is to be discussed in the main committee on Wednesday, said Evers. The first reading in the House of Representatives is scheduled for next week.

Finance senator expects adjustments in the consultations

The draft supplementary budget law implements the savings agreed by the black-red coalition last Monday on a one-to-one basis. There will still be a need for adjustments, said Evers. This will be discussed in parliament in the coming days and weeks. 

In total, the Senate wants to spend three billion euros less. Two thirds of this will be cut from the budget, while “alternative forms of financing” are planned for one third, such as loans taken out by state-owned companies that do not burden the budget.
