107 free and gender-neutral public toilets for Berlin

Öffentliche Toiletten in Berlin

The free and gender-independent use of public toilets in Berlin is to be expanded.

After a two-year test phase, the state of Berlin and the operating company Wall agreed to extend free use to 107 facilities. These are fully automatic, barrier-free and self-cleaning toilet facilities with integrated urinals.

Usage fee of 50 cents in other public toilets

According to a press release, Wall operates a total of 278 toilets in Berlin. The conversion to free-of-charge public restrooms is to take place as quickly as possible. For the remaining 171 toilets, a usage fee of 50 cents will continue to apply, which can no longer be paid with coins from 2022. The state and company want to expand cashless payment options "in order to further increase the convenience of payment and thus also the usage figures for the facilities". So far, you can pay with debit and credit cards as well as by smartphone via NFC interfaces. In view of vandalism, all Berlin toilet facilities are also to be renovated in the coming months.
