Berlin wants to launch charging station campaign for e-vehicles

The number of charging points for electric vehicles in Berlin must increase significantly in the coming years. The demand for charging capacity will increase almost sevenfold by 2030, as announced by the transport and economic administration at the presentation of their "overall charging infrastructure strategy" on Friday.

According to the figures, around 70,000 electric vehicles are currently registered in Berlin. Of these, 90 percent are passenger cars with electric drives or plug-in hybrids and ten percent are electric buses and vans, electric motorcycles and light vehicles. Around 25,000 charging points are currently available for them, at which a good 300 megawatt hours (MWh) are charged every day. The majority of charging points are private. Around 3850 charging points are publicly accessible, of which around 2400 are on public roads and 1450 on private land. A figure of 400,000 electric cars with a daily charging requirement of 2000 MWh is expected for 2030.

State seeks dialog with employers and housing industry

In order to meet demand, for example, an analysis of the potential for charging facilities on properties owned by Berlin's state-owned companies is to be carried out. The Senate also wants to make it easier for charging point installers to find space and support research and pilot projects in this area. According to the strategy paper already adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, the economic administration is to discuss with employers and the housing industry, among others, how the opportunities for private vehicle charging can be expanded - the most important area to date and, according to forecasts, also in the future. However, according to the strategy paper, the capacity for spontaneous charging in public areas should also increase.
