Water strategy: Berlin and Brandenburg to expand cooperation

Woidke und Wegner

Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke (l) and Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner.

The state governments in Berlin and Brandenburg want to coordinate their use of water resources more closely in future.

This affects the water supply and wastewater disposal, among other things, according to a joint statement from both cabinets on Friday. "The effects of climate change in particular, but also structural change in Lusatia, for example, mean that less water will be available in the future," said Brandenburg's Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens). This would be offset by an increasing demand for water in Berlin and the surrounding area.

Coordinated water management across federal states

As Berlin is dependent on the water flowing in from Brandenburg, there is a need for a coordinated approach to the resource across the federal states. A joint strategy should secure the water supply and sustainable water management in the long term, added Senator for the Environment Manja Schreiner (CDU). The " Capital Region Water Strategy 2050" is to be developed by the end of 2024.
