Berlin forests: Pines recover, oaks deteriorate

The number of apartments in Berlin increased slightly last year.
At the end of 2022, there were 2,014,562 apartments in the capital, the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office reported on Friday. That was 16,407 more compared to the previous year (plus 0.8 percent). In the last ten years, the housing stock in the capital has thus grown by a total of 7.3 percent.
Last year, most apartments were added in the districts of Treptow-Köpenick (up 2.6 percent), Marzahn-Hellersdorf (up 1.9 percent) and Lichtenberg (up 1.0 percent). In Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Tempelhof-Schöneberg and Neukölln, stock growth was less than 0.5 percent.
The majority of the apartments were created through the construction of new buildings - 15,404 apartments were added last year. Construction work on existing buildings created 1,968 apartments. Meanwhile, 965 apartments were lost through changes of use, mergers and demolitions.
