A housing project for lesbian women is being built near Berlin's Alexanderplatz.
The new building will consist of 72 rental apartments as well as a cultural center and a neighborhood café. There will also be rooms for counseling services, events and neighborhood meetings. This was announced on Tuesday by the project's cooperating partners, the municipal housing association WBM and the non-profit "Rad und Tat gGmbH" (RuT). Constructiong is planned to be completed by October 2025,
"Here, lesbians and queer women will be able to live a good life and enjoy their old age in a discrimination-free and neighborly environment," the joint statement of the cooperating partners said. "As a pioneering project in Europe, the planned lesbian housing project and queer cultural center stands for lesbian and queer visibility and gender justice," RuT managing director Jutta Brambach added.
Each apartment will reportedly be offered at affordable rents, half of them at subsidized entry-level rents starting at 6.90 euros per square meter. Five wheelchair-accessible apartments are also planned, as well as a shared apartment with eight places for women with care needs.
