Starting in spring, unisex dry toilets that do not require water, sewage or electricity are to be tested in Berlin parks.
The locations for eight districts have been decided, in four districts the vote is still ongoing, State Secretary Markus Kamrad (Greens) said in an answer to a parliamentary question by MP Kristian Ronneburg.
A total of 24 environmentally and climate-friendly toilets are to be installed by two companies and can be used free of charge. The two models are designed as dry separation toilets and are wheelchair-accessible, according to an earlier announcement by the administration. The planned locations include the Landschaftspark Herzberge in Lichtenberg, Heinrich-Grüber-Platz in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Letteplatz in Reinickendorf and Südpark in Spandau.
According to the environmental administration, the selection criteria for the toilet systems were, in addition to their self-sufficient functionality, accessibility, gender equity and safety, resistance to vandalism and the existence of suitable hand hygiene.
