Around six weeks before the election for the Berlin House of Representatives, Berliners who want to vote by mail already have the opportunity to cast their ballots.
State Election Commissioner Stephan Bröchler will inform about the status of the planning on Wednesday in the Zehlendorf City Hall. Since Monday, the approximately 2.8 million election notifications have been sent out. In the district offices, eligible voters who cannot or do not want to cast their vote on the actual election date can already make their choice.
State Election Commissioner Bröchler has set the election date for Feb. 12 after the state constitutional court declared the September 2021 elections invalid in mid-November due to numerous glitches and "serious systemic flaws." A constitutional complaint, including an urgent appeal, has been filed with the Federal Constitutional Court against the court's decision that the elections would have to be repeated in their entirety. A decision on this is still pending.
2,442,049 Berliners are eligible to vote in the repeat election, and 2,738,586 in the election for the district councils, where 16- and 17-year-old Germans and foreign citizens of a European Union member state over the age of 16 living in Berlin can also cast their ballots. Until election day, the number of eligible voters could still change slightly due to departures from Berlin and deaths.
