Hard times are ahead for passengers on the subway line U6 in northern Berlin: Due to extensive renovation work, the line has been closed between Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and the Alt-Tegel terminus for two and a half years since Monday.
According to the BVG, the above-ground section of the line will be virtually rebuilt. During the construction period, passengers will have access to a closely timed bus replacement service.
The line in question comprises five stations and, according to the BVG, has been in operation for about 65 years. Now, 2300 meters of embankment track, 6500 meters of track, eight switches, eight bridges and a large number of power supply as well as communications and train protection systems are to be renovated. In addition, the subway bridge over Seidelstraße will be demolished and rebuilt. The line is scheduled to be back in service in spring 2025.
