Northern part of U6 subway line to be closed starting November

Berlin's subway line U6 will be out of service for several years between Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and Alt-Tegel because of renovation work. The closure starts November 07, 2022.

Under full closure of operations until 2025, the above-ground section of the line will be almost completely rebuilt. This was announced by the Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) on Thursday. During the construction period, a closely timed bus replacement service will be put in place. Bus lanes will be set up for this purpose.

Route in operation for 65 years

"The northern section of the U6 has many years under its belt and is exposed to the elements on a daily basis," said the BVG's head of construction, Uwe Kutscher. The line has been in operation for 65 years, he stated.

Numerous renovations planned

According to the BVG, about 2300 meters of embankment, 6500 meters of tracks, eight switches, eight bridges and a large number of power supply, communication and train protection systems will be renewed. In addition, the subway bridge over Seidelstraße will be demolished and rebuilt.

Closures from the beginning of November

The renovation and rebuilding will start at the beginning of November. According to the BVG, the subway stations Alt-Tegel, Scharnweberstraße, Borsigwerke and Holzhauserstraße will be renovated starting in February of next year. The line is scheduled to be back in operation in spring 2025.
