Fewer fare evaders: millions of passengers with nine-euro tickets

9-Euro-Ticket

A nine-euro ticket valid for June.

Thanks to the cheap nine-euro ticket, far fewer fare dodgers have been caught on Berlin's subways and trains than before.

Between the start of the campaign on June 01, 2022 and June 24, 2022, the BVG caught 5355 passengers and the S-Bahn caught 2106 passengers without tickets. In total, just under 7500 fare evaders were caught in almost 750,000 controls. This was reported by the two companies in a response from the Senate to a question.

More than a million nine-euro tickets sold

In the same period in 2021, a total of just under 50,000 fare evaders were caught (27,000 by the BVG and around 22,500 on the S-Bahn) - well over six times as many as this year. The BVG sold more than 1.2 million nine-euro tickets by the end of June, while S-Bahn sold just under 500,000, including tickets purchased directly from Deutsche Bahn.

More passengers on public transport

In June, 16 percent more people rode BVG subways, streetcars and buses than in May. For the S-Bahn, there was a 10 percent increase in passenger numbers, the Senate responded to a question by the CDU. Results of surveys suggested that around seven percent of BVG passengers with a nine-euro ticket previously only drove cars.
