The permanent cultural-historical exhibition in the Citadel shows political monuments that have shaped the Berlin cityscape from the 18th century to the present day.
Some of the monuments will be open to the public again for the first time. The traces of their destruction, neglect, remodelling, maintenance and preservation illustrate the change in their significance and German history.
The exhibition venue will be the former provisions magazine of the Citadel, which is being extensively restored for this purpose. The ground floor of the old barracks will be the place where the history of the impact and the debates about the various monuments are traced and current monument designs are presented. In addition, a temporary exhibition will be held in the former barracks. Using contemporary documents, drawings and designs, it traces the history of the impact and debates surrounding the monuments in the respective eras.
The show in the Spandau Citadel with about 100 original monuments or parts of them also includes a granite Lenin head weighing several tons. The head of the statue was buried in a piece of woodland. The monument was cleared away after the fall of the Wall in the eastern part of Berlin.
