Andreas Schmitten: Sesshaft

This summer, the König Galerie in Berlin is showing large-format spatial sculptures by the artist Andreas Schmitten in the exhibition «Sesshaft».

The monumentality of Schmitten's works is accentuated by the high walls of the gallery's exhibition space in Kreuzberg, and the intricately crafted plinths are sometimes more striking than the sculptures they support. The reduced formal language of the works and the perfect craftsmanship with which they are made encourage associations with design. However, the comparison ignores an essential difference: design is geared towards functionality, whereas Schmitten's sculptures fulfil their sole purpose as artistic objects. «Sesshaft» can be experienced in the sacred atmosphere of the former church room in the König Galerie until the end of August.
