Festival for Freedom

Berlin is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a lavish Fest der Freiheit ("Festival for Freedom") on 9 November 2024. The capital will be transformed into a huge stage.

There will be a special focus on the soundtrack of freedom. The Band for Freedom, a huge participatory event for musical Berliners, will be playing catchy melodies along the four-kilometre-long route to commemorate the fall of the Wall. The festival will kick off with DJ sets on five stages from 7 pm.

Band for Freedom: Over 1,000 musicians

The band, consisting of up to a thousand volunteers, will play songs that stand for freedom and invite people to sing along. The aim is to create a four-kilometer-long tapestry of sound that makes the shared togetherness of all participants audible. The following pieces will be played:

• Never Let Me Down Again by Depeche Mode
• Susann by City
• Freiheit by Marius Müller-Westernhagen
• S.O.S. by Silly
• Tage wie diese by Die Toten Hosen

The Band for Freedom will be spread across five stages along the route. There will be a big fireworks display at the end.

Video screens along the route

Before the huge open-air concert starts, hundreds of video screens along the route will commemorate the memorable events of 9 November 1989, showing the most important moments in the history of the Wall with film clips and background music. The highlight will be the opening of the Bornholmer Strasse border crossing.
