At the end of the 1970s, the renovation of the Wilhelminian style old buildings found in this part of Kreuzberg began. Some parts of the neighborhood such as Chamissoplatz are now often used as film sets.
Kreuzberg 61
The neighborhood of Kreuzberg 61 is considered to be bourgeois, but it is also popular with artists and intellectuals. Bergmannstraße, Viktoriapark, and Graefekiez are located here.
Chamissoplatz
Chamissoplatz is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin. It is under a preservation order. Its beautifully renovated houses from the late 19th century with their lavish stucco decorations and old windows and front doors, the cobblestones, and the historic water pumps and gas lanterns, offer a taste of the old Berlin. The inner part of Chamissoplatz is a children's playground. On the eastern side, there is a weekly organic farmers' market on Saturdays.
Bergmannstraße and Marheineke Market Hall
The nearby Bergmannstraße is known for its numerous cafés, restaurants, and small shops, including junk stores and antiques. Every year in summer, the Bermannstraßenfest, a neighborhood party, takes place here. One of Berlin's last old market halls, the Marheineke Market Hall, is just around the corner on Marheinekeplatz. Here, traders and restauranteurs present fresh food - some of it organic and regional - on around 2500 square metres. There are also specialities from Italy, Greece, Spain, and the Arab world.
Viktoriapark and Riehmers Hofgarten
Not far from Viktoriaparks is Riehmers Hofgarten, an old residential complex from the 1920s and an early example of humane building. This building complex is located between Yorckstraße, Großbeerenstraße and Hagelberger Straße. Here you live in a green courtyard, closed to normal traffic, in a beautiful setting. Right next door there is another gothic courtyard with brick buildings next to the St. Bonifatius church on Yorckstraße.
Old Meets New in Viktoriaquartier
On the other side of the Viktoriapark are some newer apartment buildings and businesses on the site of the old brewery. The condominiums in the residential courtyard of the neighborhood Viktoriaquartier are surrounded by greenery. The clinker brick facades and the many turrets, which are inspired by the design of medieval castles, are characteristic of this area, which features a mix of historical and modern buildings. The entire residential complex is under monumental protection.
Landwehrkanal and Paul-Lincke-Ufer
Along the waters of the Landwehrkanal, stately facades and lush greenery create a completely unique atmosphere. In the middle of it all lies the hospital Urbankrankenhaus, which seems somewhat out of place with its concrete facade. This effect is counterbalanced by the many walkers and runners as well as the maritime atmosphere of the local restaurant ships. This area is also home to the Urban Harbour, a former inland harbour which has been reduced to a narrow basin. Many Berliners like to take a leisurely stroll alongside on the public promenade along the water.
Graefekiez
The Graefekiez neighborhood is an area of Wilhelminian style old buildings located between Landwehrkanal, Hasenheide, Kottbusser Damm, and the hospital. The northern and southern parts, separated by Urbanstraße, have a very different atmosphere: the south is dominated by social housing while the north features beautifully renovated buildings and high rents. The area also features many bars and pubs, small shops and the like. Grimmstraße is known for its Wilhelminian style houses and large old trees.
