Hellersdorf

Hellersdorf originates in a large-scale construction project of the GDR era. A huge prefabricated housing estate was built which still characterizes the image of Hellersdorf to this day. As a contrast, the adjacent Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf, and Biesdorf, the latter belonging to the Marzahn district, form the largest contiguous single-family housing area in Berlin.

The prefabricated housing estate Hellersdorf is situated amidst a green area, surrounded by the Hönower Weiherkette and the Wuhletal. In the center of the district lies the "Helle Mitte" shopping mall with shops, cafés, and a multiplex cinema. On Hellersdorfer Promenade, a pedestrian zone in the middle of the prefabricated high-rises, cherry trees blossom in the spring.

With its historic village center, Mahlsdorf has an almost rural flair in places. The neighborhood is home to the Mahlsdorf manor house, a Wilhelminian style museum where you can admire furniture and musical instruments from the turn of the century. The neighborhood of Kaulsdorf is famous for its lakes. The whole area is characterized by single and two-family houses and sits amidst the Barnim landscape with its flow channels from the ice age.

Hellersdorf is part of the administrative district Marzahn-Hellersdorf and divided into the districts Hellersdorf, Mahlsdorf, and Kaulsdorf.
