Weekend for Democracy

Lichterkette

On the Weekend for Democracy, Berlin is celebrating the 175th anniversary of the March Revolution with events at several locations.

At the Weekend for Demomcracy, a diverse entertainment program - including exhibitions, interactive guided tours, performances and discussions - transports the Berlin barricade fights of March 18 and 19, 1848, to the present day.

Free Guided Tours of Historical Sites

To mark the 175th anniversary of the March Revolution, a barricade modeled after the barricades that were erected in Berlin in 1848 will be installed at the historic site of the corner of Friedrichstraße and Jägerstraße. This installation is the central focal point of the Weekend for Democracy and part of several marked city walks. Free guided tours also depart from the barricade every hour.

Traditional Commemoration at the Brandenburg Gate

On March 18 at noon, the traditional commemoration of the March Revolution, organized by the citizens' initiative "Aktion 18. März", will take place at the Brandenburg Gate.

City Walks with Jim Avignon

To mark the 175th anniversary of the March Revolution, the internationally renowned artist Jim Avignon has created larger-than-life figures that will be placed throughout the city. On a city walk along the traces of the revolution, visitors can discover them all, including the figures of the doctor Rudolf Virchow and the women's rights activist Louise Aston. The route ends at the Humboldt Forum, where numerous events are taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
