Secessions: Klimt, Stuck, Liebermann

The exhibition "Secessions: Klimt, Stuck, Liebermann" includes around 200 paintings, sculptures and graphic works by relevant artists of the Secession movements.

The emergence of the Secession movements at the end of the 19th century meant nothing less than a revolution in the system of art. The dawn of modernism was directly associated with Gustav Klimt in Vienna, Franz von Stuck in Munich and Max Liebermann in Berlin. The Secessions were founded in the German-speaking countries in Munich in 1892, in Vienna in 1897, and finally in Berlin in 1898, at close intervals and with many overlapping personalities. The traditional structures of state subsidies and exhibition systems with juries based on the criteria of the royal art academies were rejected; the artists strove for freedom. Despite the diversity of the artistic approaches of this avant-garde, the goal was the liveliness and diversity of artistic forms of expression with a decidedly international orientation.

The exhibition at the Altem Museum includes numerous works by important artists. Through the cooperation with the Wien Museum, Klimt's oeuvre in particular, with over 50 works, will be the focus of the exhibition. In addition, the female artists of the Secessions from Dora Hitz to Käthe Kollwitz form a further focus.
