Deborah Poynton's canvases, some of which are monumental, are painted in a technique in which the smallest details become visible. They are works that offer a reflective visual experience that compels one to pause, and that stand up to the fleeting flood of images in the digital media. However, the overwhelming visual richness of her pictorial worlds, in which the gaze can roam almost endlessly, reveals a constructed reality combined from different set pieces. Often parts of the canvas remain empty, so that one recognises the manufactured nature of the painted images alongside deceptively real illusions.
