The exhibition "My Way" by Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker is a homage to the USA and New York City in particular.
Starting September 4th, large-format colour photographs from the Big Apple of the 1980s will be juxtaposed with a selection of photographs from his first legendary road trip across the USA in 1963 at Galerie Buchkunst Berlin.
Hoepker found his subjects on this journey and created image narratives that still touch us today: precisely observed situations from people's everyday lives, on the streets, in the casinos and bars, but also in the backyards and poor neighbourhoods. This intense and precise view of a country marked by racial discrimination, mass consumption and spirituality is the beginning of Thomas Hoepker's photojournalistic career.
And the selection of large-format colour photographs from the 1980s in their correspondence with the black-and-white images taken two decades earlier, the exhibition "My Way" spans a photographic period across the country, its history and to those who shape this history. The images decipher the myths of the time and yet have already transformed themselves into mythical images.
