The Gropius Bau in Berlin is dedicating the first retrospective in Germany to the South African activist and photographer Zanele Muholi.
Born in 1972 in Umlazi, South Africa, artist Zanele Muholi describes herself as a visual activist and has been documenting the lives of South Africa's Black LGBTQIA+ community in intimate photographs since the early 2000s. Alongside lesser-known image series, the exhibition at the Gropius Bau in Berlin includes recent works and thus makes it possible to experience the entire range of Muholi's photographic practice, in which themes such as sexual politics, racist violence, community resistance and self-assertion are negotiated.
