John Heartfield – Photography plus Dynamite

With the exhibition "John Heartfield - Photography plus Dynamite" the Berlin Academy of Arts (Akademie der Künste) shows the many facets of one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century.

John Heartfield is considered the inventor of political photomontage. His montages became icons in the fight against National Socialism. The show "John Heartfield - Photography plus Dynamite" not only shows photomontages, however, but also directs the eye to Heartfield's work in the fields of book design, stage design, photography and animated film.

Berlin Heartfield exhibition shows some works for the first time

The basis of the Heartfield retrospective is the reworking and digitalization of his estate, which is located in the Academy of Arts. Works and documents, some of which are being shown for the first time, make his complex field of reference visible, as the Academy announced. During his life, which was marked by persecution and exile, Heartfield had close connections to important contemporaries such as Grosz, Brecht and Piscator. Previously unknown sources of inspiration, such as pieces from his graphic and East Asian collection, expand the exhibition.
