«Pop on Paper» presents the highlights of the Pop Art collection of the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin.
Works by, among others, Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana, Gerald Laing, Eduardo Paolozzi or Roy Lichtenstein guide visitors through ten chapters that introduce individual artists or specific Pop Art themes.
The often colorful, gaudy and luminous works in the exhibition reflect the development of the art movement - for example, the beginnings with Richard Hamilton in England, the enthusiasm for consumption in the mid-1950s in the USA or the more critical view of consumer society by Pop Art artists in the 1960s.
The art movement developed in the mid-1950s and is characterized by a turn towards everyday and consumer society. Frequent Pop Art motifs come from advertising, comics or news and are de-contextualized. The offensive approach to printmaking was of particular relevance to the artistic movement. Through colour screen printing and the like, artists were able to reproduce their works and thus present them to a wider audience outside the art elite.
