Masculinities: Liberation through Photography

The exhibition «Masculinities: Liberation through Photography» at Gropius Bau offers a photographic examination of the masculine in all its contradiction and complexity.

Under the title «Masculinities: Liberation through Photography», a group exhibition explores the ways in which masculinity has been experienced, performatively produced and socially constructed since the 1960s. In a time in which classical images of masculinity are in crisis and concepts such as "toxic" and "fragile" masculinity shape social discourses, over 300 works by 50 international artists* offer a panorama of the cinematic and photographic examination of the masculine in all its contradictoriness and complexity.

The focus is also on the female perception of masculinity

Central points of reference for the exhibition in the Martin Gropius Bau are themes such as patriarchy, power, queer identity, race and class, sexuality, and the female perception of masculinity, which comes to the fore as a largely fluid, performative identity concept. Works by Laurie Anderson, Richard Avedon, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Peter Hujar, Isaac Julien, Annette Messager, Catherine Opie and others will be on view. «Masculinities: Liberation through Photography» is curated by Alona Pardo.
