The Germanic Tribes

In the exhibition «The Germanic Tribes. A Critical Look» in the James Simon Gallery compares the public image of the Teutons with the current state of research.

«The Germanic Tribes. A Critical Look» shows the current state of research on the Germanic tribes and presents the settlement history of the area on the right bank of the Rhine between the 2nd century BC and the 4th century AD on the basis of numerous new finds and high-ranking loans. The inventory allows a factually sound view of an important epoch in history, which is either only viewed in contrast to the development in the Roman Empire or is interpreted propagandistically with nationalistic intent.

The exhibition is presented in a special exhibition room of the James Simon Gallery. In addition, an exhibition section in the «Vaterländischen Saal» of the Neues Museum is dedicated to the role of archaeological «Germanic research» in the history of the museum and critically illuminates it.
