Museum Barberini
Opened in 2017, Museum Barberini in Potsdam has become an instant success with spectacular temporary exhibitions on major topics, artists and periods of art. more
From October 2019, the Barberini Museum in Potsdam will be showing still life works by the Dutch painter.
For the first time, a van Gogh exhibition will focus exclusively on the still life genre of his art. In the extensive work of the painter and illustrator, still lifes make up around one fifth. The Barberini Museum is showing 27 of these works, which allow the development of van Gogh's style to be traced.
Like hardly any other genre of painting, still life invites us to experiment. The exhibited works show how Vincent Van Gogh dealt with light, shadow, colours and spatial representations. The artistic currents of the time that inspired the painter - such as Impressionism - also become clear. Van Gogh's still lifes reveal his development in the use of colours in a particularly concise way. The increasing use of a strong and luminous palette of colours is regarded as a decisive moment in his work.
Vincent Van Gogh is regarded as the founder of modern painting and influenced numerous other painters. He was born in the Netherlands in 1853. He taught himself painting largely autodidactically and influenced subsequent generations of artists with his unmistakably lively style. Among his most famous works are "Sunflowers" (1889), "Wheatfield with Crows" (1890) and "The Starry Night" (1889).
