Wider footpaths and a colourful programme on Friedrichstrasse: From the beginning of June to the end of November, a car-free section between Leipziger Strasse and Französische Strasse is planned.
Friedrichstraße in Mitte will be closed to cars for a whole six months. A traffic-calmed area at Checkpoint Charlie will also be established. The project could be a starting point for further solutions and a step towards a car-free city and cleaner air. The Mitte district office of Berlin, the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Business, and visitBerlin invite Berliners to stroll and discover the car-free zone together.
During the car-free period, a varied supporting programme with all kinds of attractions for visitors is planned. Details will be published shortly after the start of the project "Car-free Friedrichstraße". During the 2019 pilot project, food trucks, workshops, animations, a children's book bus and live music attracted numerous guests on a car-free weekend.
The traffic experiment is intended to find out what effects this would have on foot, bicycle, car and delivery traffic in the area and what the users of Friedrichstraße would gain from it. According to the Senate Administration, the aim of the traffic experiment is to increase the attractiveness of Friedrichstraße for Berliners and tourists and thus also to strengthen trade and retail.
