From February 2020, visitors can admire works by the French impressionist Claude Monet in the Barberini Museum in Potsdam.

The exhibition shows the artistic diversity of Monet. From his first composition from 1858 to his late works from Giverny, visitors can follow the development of the Impressionist painter and the subtle elaboration of his own style. Some of the 110 paintings on display are privately owned and otherwise inaccessible to the public. The Monet retrospective is the result of a collaboration between the Barberini Museum and the Denver Art Museum.

Claude Monet as Icon of Impressionism

Claude Monet's impressionist paintings are characterized by his experimental exploration of color and light. While his first works - such as the Manet-inspired "Breakfast in the Green" - still belonged to Realism, Monet's later style increasingly turned to Impressionism. Part of his artistic philosophy was outdoor work. Most of his works were created in the open air and directly in front of the motif.

About the artist Claude Monet

Claude Monet was born in Paris in 1840 as Oscar-Claude Monet. At the age of 15, still as a pupil, he achieved a certain degree of fame for his caricatures of classmates and teachers. At the end of the 1960s Monet turned from realistic painting to Impressionism - inspired by Gustave Caillebotte and Auguste Renoir, among others. His garden in his tenement house in Giverny served as a motif for numerous paintings by Monet.
