Mantegna and Bellini – Masters of the Renaissance

The exhibition «Mantegna and Bellini - Masters of the Renaissance» in the Gemäldegalerie illuminates the mutual influence of the two masters of the early Renaissance.

When Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) married Giovanni Bellini's (1435-1516) sister, one of the most artistically fruitful friendships of the Renaissance arose. The special exhibition brings the works of both artists together for the first time and shows their mutual influence. Mantegna showed Bellini the world of ancient art discovered by his former master Francesco Squarcione. Bellini in turn influenced Mantegna with his soft, idiosyncratic painting style.
