The Amerika Gedenkbibliothek was a gift from the Americans to the West Berliners after the end of the Soviet blockade and is now one of the largest libraries in the city.
After West Berlin had survived the Soviet blockade, the Americans donated the America Memorial Library to Berlin. The building was also financed thanks to donations from the American population. The building in Kreuzberg was planned jointly by German and American architects as a public library. The Showcase of the West, as it is also known, was intended from the outset to be a symbol of freedom of education and opinion. The grand opening took place in 1954.
Together with the Berlin City Library in Berlin-Mitte, the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek is home to the Central and Regional Library of Berlin. Readers will not only find specialist literature on many humanities subjects here, but also media from the fields of fiction, film and music. Original works of art can even be borrowed from the Artothek. The children's and youth library is also located in the Amerika Gedenkbibliothek. In addition to providing a wide range of media, numerous events, workshops and educational programs take place.
In the meantime, the America Memorial Library has become too small for its extensive range of services. A new building on Blücherplatz could provide a remedy. The relocation of the Central Library to the former Galeries Lafayette building is also being discussed.
