    The Center Potsdamer Platz

The center at Potsdamer Platz stands out with its unique architecture. The ensemble of seven individual buildings houses a cinema, a museum, restaurants, offices and apartments.

The Center Potsdamer Platz, formerly known as Sony Center, stands out with its spectacular roof construction. The striking building is considered to be the most important Berlin construction project by architect Helmut Jahn. The center, which strictly speaking is not a single building but a complex of eight buildings, is one of Berlin's landmarks and sights. Offices, apartments, restaurants and cultural facilities such as a cinema and a museum are located on a total of almost six hectares.

Spectacular roof construction characterizes Potsdamer Platz

Probably the most striking element of the architectural ensemle at Potsdamer Platz is the 67-metre-high roof construction made of fabric panels that stretches like a tent roof over the middle of the center area. The individual panels are attached with tie rods to a steel ring that rests on the surrounding buildings. Another striking feature is the glass skyscraper, which at 103 meters is the tallest building on Potsdamer Platz. It is used by Deutsche Bahn and forms the eastern end of the Center Potsdamer Platz.

Historical fragments of the Hotel Esplanade

Shortly before construction of the center began, it became apparent that the surviving fragments of the historic Hotel Esplanade had not been taken into account in the planning. After considering demolition, another solution was found: The preserved Kaisersaal was moved 75 meters with the help of an air cushion and integrated into the center. The hotel's surviving breakfast room was also reassembled after being dismantled.

Culture and entertainment

The Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum für Film und Fernsehen is one of the cultural institutions at the Center am Potsdamer Platz. Here visitors can find important collections of film and television history. Retrospectives of the Berlinale, special exhibitions, readings and other events take place regularly. Everything revolves around the topic of film at the Arsenal cinema, which is dedicated to bringing international film culture to life. Lego fans of all ages can let off steam at the Legoland Discovery Center.

Modernization planned

The center at Potsdamer Platz is to be modernized in 2025. In addition to construction work on the office buildings, the redesign of the green and outdoor areas is planned. The range of restaurants and retail outlets is also to be expanded.
