Kollwitzplatz

Markt on Kollwitzplatz

People walk across the market at Kollwitzplatz.

Kollwitzplatz exudes a special charm with its stucco façades from the Wilhelminian era. The many stores, cafés and restaurants around the square make Kollwitzkiez popular with Berliners and tourists alike.

Kollwitzplatz is located in the middle of the popular Prenzlauer Berg district. Named after the painter and graphic artist Käthe Kollwitz, who lived here almost until the end of her life, the square now gives its name to the entire neighborhood.

Neighborhood with Wilhelminian charm

Kollwitzplatz is a triangular area with the Käthe Kollwitz monument in the middle. The larger-than-life bronze figure depicts the artist sitting pensively. More decisive for the popularity of the area than the approximately 6,000 square meter square are the houses, their facades and the numerous shopping and dining options in the adjacent streets. There is a wide range of cafés, bars and restaurants. And the fact that these offerings are located in buildings whose façades still exude the charm of the Wilhelminian era makes Kollwitzplatz all the more attractive. Once a week, the popular organic market on Kollwitzplatz sells organically grown food, textiles and handicrafts.

Around Kollwitzplatz: Kulturbrauerei, Pratergarten and synagogue

Near Kollwitzplatz there are sights that are well worth discovering on a walk through the neighborhood. The Kulturbrauerei is located between Knaackstraße and Schönhauser Allee. The originally preserved brick halls attract visitors with discotheques, cinemas, restaurants and a museum. Berlin's oldest beer garden, the Pratergarten, is also located nearby. Here, up to 600 guests can enjoy locally brewed beer under large chestnut trees. South of Kollwitzplatz is the Rykestraße Synagogue, one of the best-preserved synagogues in Berlin. The brick building can accommodate up to 1200 people. Near the synagogue is the Jewish Cemetery Schönhauser Allee where important Jewish personalities have found their final resting place.
