Sights in Mitte
The TV Tower, the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island and the Reichstag building - no other Berlin district has more sights than Mitte. more
Spittelmarkt is a historic square in Berlin-Mitte. Once densely built-up, only the Spindlerbrunnen fountain remains as a reminder of the original Spittelmarkt after its destruction during the war.
If you want to imagine Spittelmarkt in its historical form, you will need your imagination, as hardly anything of the historic town square is still recognizable today.
Spittelmarkt was named after the Gertrauden Hospital, which was founded at the end of the 13th century (Spital became Spittel). After being rebuilt several times, the hospital was demolished in 1881. After the demolition of the hospital, residential and commercial buildings were built on the edges of the square. In the 19th century, Spittelmarkt developed into an important transportation hub in Berlin.
During the Second World War, the peripheral buildings of Spittelmarkt were destroyed. The square lost its original shape when it was rebuilt from 1969. Only the Spindlerbrunnen fountain is a reminder of the former Spittelmarkt. Not far from today's Spittelmarkt are the Spittelkolonnaden. These were built in 1776 according to the plans of Carl von Gontard.
